When I was in college I went to the gym 3x a week. Ever since then... not so much. These days my only real exercise comes from wrenching, which while good for the forearms and whatever muscles you use to crawl under the car, realize you left the tool somewhere else, and get back up, it doesn’t quite make up for sitting at a desk 8-10 hours a day 5 days a week.
My basement is partially finished, including a 10x12 room which was either used as some attempt at a bedroom or some sort of dungeon. In any case, it is a good candidate to set up a home gym in because I need more projects like I need a hole in the head.
I do have a cheap bench and barbell set, though it is of course still in my parent’s basement (it will make it here eventually). Otherwise it’s pretty much a blank slate. I intend to get some foam floor/mats to put down over the tile (cue harbor freight) and look for a set of dumbells. Maybe eventually I’ll find someone selling a cheap treadmill or exercise bike. I might even hang a heavy bag.
This may be the least interesting picture I’ve ever posted. Yes, that switch is about waist-height.
So, what does Oppo suggest? I’m looking for general input, as well as wondering if there is any reason not to buy the cheapest dumbbells I can find (seriously it’s just some cast iron).

Squat rack / bench combo. I bought a basic one at a sporting goods store for around $200, plus another $200 for plates and bars. Was never really into strength trainig before, but now I can do upper body and legs and I absolutely love it. Best investment I’ve made all year.

1.) Thick rubber pad. Should be very heavy. That’s nice tile. You can cut OSB plywood for underneath it too.
2.) Power rack with foam padding underneath.
3.) Bench if yours is not good or stable .
4.) Dumbbell rack and hex dumbbells of appropriate weight (try to find used)
Dick’s sporting goods used to have a good deal on the olympic weight sets. Not sure anymore. Body-Solid makes reasonable equipment like power racks and benches. Not top of the line but not department store garbage.
Watch Craigslist and add weight over time.

I’m back and forth between rubber stall mats and the harbor freight interlocking foam tile. Main concerned with the rubber stall mats is if they stink like rubber in enclosed room with no windows and minimal ventilation.

I’ll keep this in mind! I have a small bench/rack but if/when I get back to the point I was at in school I won’t have enough weights to put on the little bar! May get an olympic set then - I’ll keep the squat rack/bench combo in mind for that

The foam interlocking tile is good to put under the power rack. It will also protect the floor from the bench. Put OSB under it.
By heavy rubber mat, I mean something like this:

Again, with OSB underneath you can have a nice platform outside the rack. If you plan to deadlift you are going to need something like this. The interlocking foam really doesn’t protect very well. The smell goes away over time.

Olympic set is definitely worth it for squats and dead lifts. Plus you could even do Olympic lifts (if you have the headroom). Good luck, may the gains be with you!

Tractor Supply has 3/4" rubber horse stall mats, $40 for 4x6. The OSB is an interesting idea to keep from breaking the tile in either case

That and it will also dampen the noise more than just rubber.

Others have covered many bases. Think about a power tower for dips, pull-ups, etc.

Honestly, look for gyms going out of business. Happens all the time and you can usually pick up equipment for pretty cheap.
